Whew! I'm glad I'm not the only one. Lauren, I am wildly jealous of your staff writing position. Wildly. jealous. :) Jesaka: May I ask how you first got into corporate copywriting? I haven't had to do it before as a freelancer, but I'm wondering if it's an area I should consider branching into.

So well said, Steph! Even though the four titles that Conde Nast is shuttering haven't been on my reading or pitching lists, I found the news really upsetting. Magazines are disappearing so quickly! I've dreamed of working for, then being published in, print magazines since I got to tour the Sassy offices when I was in high school. Those days feel so far away lately! Before I went full-time freelance, I made the choice to pursue corporate copywriting to pay my rent and bills. I just wasn't convinced I could do with essay and article writing. I would still like to see a better mix (less copywriting) but I don't see giving up the corporate gigs completely.

Full-time freelancing is hard. I love the pros but really hate the cons. Worse is when a pro becomes a con, which so frequently happens. I am glad I have recently gotten a new client and that client pays regularly and wants me to have more hours for her work.

Amen, sister. The full-time freelancing life, which was once so irresistible to me, is looking scarier and scarier these days. Luckily, I have one of the rare full-time staff writing jobs still out there.

I'm still freelancing as much as I can, and it's still something I want to do. But I'm more grateful than ever for the "real job" cushion I have.
