I so wish I had read this a couple weeks ago. I wrote a not so amazing resignation letter - for the second time to the same company. I am okay with what I wrote but I could have written what you did. Oh well ....

@Shaun: Feeling on the verge, Shaun? ;)

@Susan: That's actually a great suggestion, especially considering how important the first few sentences of a letter are, setting the tone as they do. Thanks!

I love your resignation letter, and I love that you sang at your ex's wedding! Just some food for thought... In my writing certificate program, we just did a module on business letters, and my prof uses two sets of instructions depending on whether you're writing a "good news" or a "bad news" letter. For good news, he says you should front load the news. ("Congratulations! You've been chosen to receive a $20,000 writer's grant.") For bad news, he says you should start with other information and build up to the bad news. I can see your point, because you don't want your key message to get buried, but he would suggest leading with "You've been an awesome manager, and I've learned so much from you over the years, etc., etc." It's similar to how nice people broach the idea of breaking up. Again, just some food for thought.
