I have a couple of mentors (though I don't think they're aware of their standing). One of them was my manager at a previous job, and we were so much on the same level with what we believed and wanted to achieve. It's been a couple of years since that job, but we both still move through our lives working on similar projects and helping each other. Her advice is always very spot-on, and valuable to me.

My other mentor, um, doesn't know I exist. She's a writer whose autobiography and general persona has inspired me to become more disciplined in my own writing practice, taking no guff from anyone! It's interesting how her influence sustains me even though we've never met.

Awww, I'm very flattered, Steph! And I'm all for creating an army of advisor or board of advisors rather than leaning on one person for everything. A lot of my mentors are virtual, like Michelle Goodman, Allison Winn Scotch, and Penelope Trunk (though I did have dinner with her once two years ago). Here in Boston, I have a totally kick-ass mentor named Rachel who has connected me with several high-paying, steady clients and answers questions not just about writing but also about relationships and family stuff. She even took the day off work to attend my Dad's funeral and sent a gift when I was on TV last year. Mentors rock!
