Will An Editor Judge You If You Don’t Have An Online Platform?

Yes. She is quietly judging you.

As a writer, do you need to have a website or blog?

It’s a question I’m asked pretty regularly by coaching clients, blog readers, and other freelance writers.

My response? Well, I can’t speak for all editors out there but, during my time fielding intern and blogger applications, and freelance queries, I always did the same thing.

If a website, blog, or Twitter URL did not appear as part of the writer’s email signature, I immediately googled their name so as to find it myself.

And if I didn’t find it?

I immediately questioned the abilities of the writer.

Shameless Self-Promotion: My New Mom Blog

My life has been pretty full lately. A little too full. But in case you were wondering what I looked forward to most in the course of my work week (aside from the moment when the lights go out and my head hits the pillow), I thought I’d share with you one of my latest projects.

Link Love: March 19, 2010

It’s been a long, ridiculously busy week and, I must admit, I’m feeling a bit burnt out. Which is why, last night, I forced myself to step away from my laptop and indulge in an evening of Netflix+hot cocoa. Still, work goes on, and I completed a copywriting project for a new client, had my very first career coaching appointment, and got back into the bloggy swing of things. I’d still like to write up a guest post, organize the content for my new online portfolio, and make some headway on my e-book but, you know…we’ll see how that goes. 🙂 In the meantime:

PSA: Nerve’s New Look

tools-of-attraction-on-homepage

I’ve been a bit distracted for the past month, so I thought I’d share why.

The other month, Nerve.com (the site I do most of my work for) got itself a new CEO, and he immediately set about brainstorming how to whip things into shape.

Changes were discussed, and I lived in a state of high anxiety for weeks, unsure whether or not my main source of income would eventually be kaput. Finally, I was tasked with telling my bloggers that soon, the Modern Materialist (Nerve’s products blog) would be no more.

Coffee Break: Selling Yourself

Between a last-second edit test, a quick trip to PA, and a full day holding poses for a portrait artist, I. am. wiped. So I hope you’ll forgive me for relying on an easy-as-pie Coffee Break post so early in the week.

This one was actually inspired by a conversation taking place over at the mediabistro bulletin boards, on how different pitching tactics have different success rates.

PSA: Dude Blogger Wanted!

Hey guys! Exciting news! (Well, I find it exciting…)

As lead blogger over at the Modern Materialist, I’m in charge of making sure content is Awesome. At the moment, I’m thinking things could possibly get even awesomer if I had another male blogger, just to even up the score a bit (apparently, posting about sparkly chandeliers, pretty sofas, and flouncy skirts every five seconds isn’t fair and balanced).

Just for those who haven’t been over there yet, the Modern Materialist is Nerve.com‘s products and home design blog. Bloggers are paid per post ($10/post), with an average of 3-5 posts a day. If you’re interested, or have any questions, please send me an e-mail! If you’re applying for the gig, please do include a letter of interest, and links to relevant clips.

If you know of anyone who might be interested, by all means, spread the word! Thanks guys!
